World number one Jannik Sinner produced the best performance of his comeback so far as he defeated Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of his home event. Sinner went an early break up but was pegged back before taking the first set on a tiebreak. He then earned an early break in set two which proved to be the difference. The Italian is now undefeated in 24 matches.
Casper Ruud is on an unbeaten run of his own after a comfortable win over Jaume Munar in the last round. Ruud defeated the Spaniard 6-3 6-4. That makes it nine wins in a row for the world number seven after winning his first Masters 1000 in Madrid less than two weeks ago.
Sinner has won all three of their matches in straight sets, but this will be their first match on a clay court. They last played at the World Tour Finals last autumn, with Sinner thrashing Ruud 6-1 6-2. This will undoubtedly be closer due to how much the Norwegian excels on clay. Nevertheless, Sinner seems to be finding another level and should win out in three sets.
