Janice Tjen was in Billie Jean King Cup action for Indonesia last time out, winning all four of her singles matches. However, she struggled in the WTA events prior, with first-round exits in Charleston, Miami, Indian Wells and Merida. Despite those recent victories, she still has a negative win-loss record in 2026.
Her opponent in the first-round is Alina Charaeva. She beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first stage of qualifying, before overcoming Nikola Bartunkova in three tight sets. She reached a ranking high of 126 earlier this month. Charaeva has already notched up a title on the ITF circuit after success in Midland, but she is yet to win a tour-level match this season. She qualified for the Open de Rouen last week but lost to Elisabetta Cocciaretto in round one.
Tjen has been far from her best this season, especially compared to how she fared in 2025. Nevertheless, she will begin as the favourite to win this first-round match.
