Jakub Mensik secured a point for Team Europe on day one of the Laver Cup after squeezing past Alex Michelsen in the 10-point tiebreak. He made a dominant start and kept his cool after being broken for the first time when serving for the match to win 6-1 6-7 10-8.
He will face Alex de Minaur on day 3, with Team World 9-3 up following a clean sweep on day two. The Australian played his part as he got the team off to a strong start with a straight sets win over world number three Alexander Zverev. De Minaur bolted out of the gates quickly and seemed to cope well with the slower court conditions, while also mixing plenty of variety to win 6-1 6-4.
De Minaur leads the head-to-head 2-0 after wins in Vienna and Rotterdam within the last year, both indoor events. The slow court speed neutralises the Czech’s booming serve, which limits his weapons against De Minaur. The Australian performed well against Zverev and is the favourite to win here.
