Iva Jovic’s season began incredibly strongly as she reached the final of the Hobart International and then made it through to her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open. Jovic is just 18 and already inside the top 20 of the world rankings, though her form has taken a slight dip over the past month. Paula Badosa is her second-round opponent. The former world number two picked up a win in round one as she beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets. Badosa was down a break twice in the first set but still managed to wrestle back the momentum as she went in front. A controlled second set saw her win 7-5 6-3. After her run to the semi-finals in Austin at the 125 event last week, Badosa now has four wins from her last five matches.
Badosa’s struggles with injuries have seen her drop to 100 in the world, but she is managing to string a few wins together at the moment. If she is fit enough, she could cause problems for Jovic, who has shown signs of inconsistency lately.
