Iga Swiatek will be aiming for a third tournament win in Stuttgart as she begins her campaign at the round-of-16 stage. She won her titles in 2022 and 2023, beating Aryna Sabalenka in both finals. Swiatek has not competed since a shock early defeat in Miami to compatriot Magda Linette. She has since parted ways with Wim Fissette and is now under the tutelage of Francois Roig – the former coach of Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu. The former world number one is still searching for her first title of the campaign.
She faces Laura Siegemund. The German, who won this event back in 2017, won her first-round match after coming from a set down to beat Viktoriya Tomova. She won 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-1.
Swiatek leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on clay and is yet to drop a set to Siegemund. This is a new start for the six-time Grand Slam champion and she should feel refreshed after some time away. Swiatek is a clear favourite here.
