Iga Swiatek is still searching for her first title of the season. She began her clay court season in Stuttgart last week but could only advance to the quarter-finals as she lost to Mirra Andreeva despite going a set up. That was a disappointing first event for Swiatek since announcing her partnership with new coach Francisco Roig, but she has a strong record at this tournament, having won the title in 2024, along with a final in 2023.
She received a bye in round one and now takes on Daria Snigur. The Ukrainian advanced after overcoming Daria Kasatkina in an epic. The match went all the way to a deciding set tiebreak, with Snigur saving four match points on her way to winning it 15-13, finally converting a seventh of her own.
Despite her heroics in round one, this is likely to be a very comfortable opener for Swiatek, as she plots a deep run and a second title in Madrid.
