Despite a decent hard court buildup, which included a quarter-final appearance in Cincinnati, Holger Rune could only make the second-round of the US Open as he was defeated by qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff in five sets. It’s been an up and down year for the Dane, who has struggled with fitness but also shown signs of real promise, having reached the final in Indian Wells and won the Barcelona Open title.

He will go up against Francisco Cerundolo on day two of the Laver Cup. The Argentinian also lost in round two of the US Open, despite being two sets to love up against Leandro Riedi. Cerundolo enjoyed a very strong clay court season for the most part, but his form has taken a dip ever since his surprise defeat in the first-round of the French Open in May.

The head-to-head is 1-1 but this is their first match on a hard court. Rune possesses the stronger game indoors and should have enough for the victory.
