Hamad Medjedovic booked his place in the second-round of the Italian Open with a straight sets win over Valentin Royer. The Serb was 3-1 down in the second set but then reeled off the final five games to seal a 6-4 6-3 win after one hour and 42 minutes. Medjedovic advanced to the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open in his last event.
His next opponent is Joao Fonseca. The Brazilian could only advance to the third-round of the Madrid Open as he lost to fellow teenager Rafael Jodar in three sets. Nevertheless, the clay court season has been productive for Fonseca, as he reached his first Masters 1000 semi-final at the Monte-Carlo Masters, along with a quarter-final appearance at the BMW Open.
Medjedovic is performing strongly at the moment, but Fonseca will be hoping to get back on track after a disappointing campaign in Madrid, and he is still the favourite to advance to the next round.
