Hailey Baptiste notched up the best win of her career as she beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a three set thriller. Sabalenka, who had won her last two events and was on a 15-match winning streak, looked on course for victory as she comfortably took the first set. However, Baptiste drew level in the second and the match went to a decider. She trailed 5-4 but managed to keep her hopes alive as she saved five match points. Sabalenka spurned another match point in the tiebreak as Baptiste reeled off the final three points to complete a dramatic 2-6 6-2 7-6 (6) win after two hours and 30 minutes.
She will now face Mirra Andreeva. The Russian advanced after a straight sets win over Leylah Fernandez. She was 4-1 down in the first set but recovered to take the lead after a dominant tiebreak. The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the second, but Andreeva proved too strong as she completed a 7-6 (1) 6-3 win. It’s been a strong clay court campaign up to this point for the 19-year-old, with a title in Linz and now two semi-finals at this event and the Stuttgart Open.
Andreeva leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a comfortable win at Wimbledon last year. Baptiste will fancy her chances if she can continue with her aggressive approach, but Andreeva has found a way to win in recent weeks.
