Hailey Baptiste overcame a slow start to defeat Tatjana Maria in the first-round of the Miami Open. Maria raced ahead into a 5-1 lead, only for Baptiste to win six games in a row to take the first set. The American won two more games on the bounce as she broke at the start of the second, winning 7-5 6-2 after one hour and 18 minutes.
She now takes on Liudmila Samsonova. The Russian is struggling in terms of results and is currently on a four-match losing streak. She took the first set against Ashlyn Krueger in her opening match at Indian Wells but still went on to lose in three. Her best result of the season was a quarter-final finish in Brisbane, but that was at the start of the year.
Baptiste leads the head-to-head 2-1 and won their earlier meeting this year at the Abu Dhabi Open. She has the game to disrupt Samsonova, who has not been close to her best so far this term.
