Hailey Baptiste pulled off a brilliant win in the previous round as she defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets. Svitolina has been one of the most consistent players at the start of this season, having amassed 20 victories already, but Baptiste raced ahead as she took the first set comfortably. Despite going up a double break and serving for the match, Svitolina would fight back and draw level at 5-5. Nevertheless, the American held her nerve to win 6-3 7-5.
She now faces Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian came through a three set match with Jasmine Paolini. Ostapenko had recovered from 5-2 down in the first set, only to be broken once again when serving to stay in it as she went behind. Nevertheless, she won the second set and looked set for the win after establishing a 4-0 lead in the decider. Despite initially failing to serve it out, with Paolini making a comeback of her own, she would go on to seal a 5-7 6-3 7-5 win.
Ostapenko can be unpredictable, but she showed plenty of resolve in her last match and has enough quality to get through this one.
