Hailey Baptiste overcame a huge scare as she defeated Jessika Ponchet in the first-round of the Open de Rouen. The American lost the first set and was on her way out of the tournament as Ponchet broke to serve for the match in the second. Nevertheless, Baptiste broke back and edged clear in the tiebreak. She went on to dominate the third set to claim a 3-6 7-6 (6) 6-2 win after two hours and 10 minutes.
She now faces Iryna Shymanovich in the next stage of the tournament. Shymanovich got past Linda Fruhvirtova in the previous round. She was 3-1 down in the first set but then won the next five games in succession. Shymanovich was broken when serving for the match but quickly broke again and won 6-3 7-5.
Baptiste will be seen as the favourite, though she’ll need to raise her level from the opening round if she is to advance to the quarter-finals.
