Gael Monfils vs Wu Yibing prediction

Former champion Gael Monfils opens as a heavy favourite against Yibing Wu.

The Frenchman won the title here back in 2016 and is a two-time Washington finalist, which shows his liking for the event. 

The 38-year-old currently sits inside the top 50 and won a hard court title in Auckland right at the start of the year, but he needs to rekindle some of that form having been beaten in four of his last five matches. 

His opponent Wu has lost all three of his tour-level matches this year but the world number 243 is strong on this surface on the Challenger circuit, lifting at title in Tyler at the start of June. 

The Chinese underdog could therefore cause a problem if Monfils isn’t as focused as he can and should be, but we expect the Frenchman to recognise the need to re-energise his year and he should have way too much firepower here.
