Gael Monfils’ struggles with illness have disrupted his clay court preparations ahead of yet another French Open for the 38-year-old. He was forced to withdraw from the BMW Open and also pulled out of the Madrid Open before his second-round match against Andrey Rublev. He took a break and returned in Hamburg but lost in the first-round to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
He takes on Hugo Dellien. The Spaniard has struggled for the majority of the clay season, as he failed to get out of qualifying in Barcelona and Madrid. There has been a resurgence of sorts in recent weeks, as he finally got past the qualifying stages in Rome and lost to Alex de Minaur in the third round. He followed that up with a run to the semi-finals of a Challenger event in Skopje but he still would have been disappointed not to go further as the top seed.
As long as Monfils is healthy, he should be good value for another victory in the first-round of Roland Garros.
