Gael Monfils became the oldest match winner at the Monte-Carlo Masters since 1973 as he defeated Tallon Griekspoor in the first-round. The Frenchman lost a tight first set on a tiebreak, but he began to exert control in the match and despite failing to serve out the match on the first attempt at 5-2 in the third set, he wrapped up a 6-7 (7) 6-1 6-4 victory after two hours and 15 minutes. With the win, he overtook Richard Gasquet as the French player with most Masters 1000 victories.
Alexander Bublik begins his clay court season at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He impressed last year by making the quarter-finals of the French Open, becoming the first male player from Kazakhstan to achieve the feat at a Grand Slam. This was a major feature of his impressive 2025, and he is still safely inside the top 15 in the world. His results at the Sunshine Double events were not great, as he won just one of three matches. Bublik will be hoping to get back on track with a deep run here, though he has only ever won a single match at this event.
Monfils leads the head-to-head 2-1, but Bublik has won their previous meeting on clay. This should be a watchable match between two entertainers, but the Kazakhstani is the firm favourite.
