Of the four teams to have made the US Open mixed doubles semi-finals, only Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli have yet to drop a set. They’ve been utterly dominant, dropping just four games against Taylor Townsend and Alexander Zverev, before silencing the crowd by outplaying fan-favourites Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz. Bencic and Cobolli only look to be getting stronger by the match, which does not bode well for their competition.

Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina sped through their first-round tie against Alexandra Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime, winning 4-1, 4-1 before having a much tougher time of things last time out. Katerina Siniakova and Harry Patten, the pair who knocked out Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic. Three consecutive tie-breakers underlines just how close it was, with the both teams pushed to their limits. Eventually, Monfils and Svitolina won out but it remains to be seen how much that victory took out of them physically and mentally.

As impressive as Monfils and Svitolina’s run has been, it feels like Bencic and Cobolli are stepping up a gear the longer they spend on court together as we saw against Williams and Alcaraz. They are playing with little pressure on their shoulders and it will be hard for Monfils and Svitolina to match them. Whilst the latter will battle hard and likely take the match into a third set, back Bencic and Cobolli to sneak through.
