Katie Volynets vs Hanyu Guo prediction

Katie Volynets came from a set and a break down to beat Kimberly Birrell in the first-round of the Wuhan Open. Birrell had won their match in Seoul just a few weeks earlier, and she looked in control of this match after winning the first set tiebreak and going 2-0 up in the second. However, Volynets fought back to win 6-7 (1) 7-6 (3) 6-3 after over three hours on court. She created 22 break point opportunities in total, converting eight of those.

Her next opponent is Hanyu Guo. The 28-year-old pulled off an upset after defeating world number 16 Sorana Cirstea. Guo was a set and 4-0 down at one point, with Cirstea also serving for the match in the decider, but the Chinese player produced a remarkable recovery to win 1-6 7-6 (6) 7-5 after two hours and 41 minutes.

Volynets has far greater tour-level experience and is the firm favourite to win, but Gao will have home support on her side.
