Tommy Paul ended Valentin Vacherot’s defence of his Shanghai Masters title with a straight sets victory in the third-round. The American saved six out of seven break point opportunities, winning 6-4 6-2. 

He now faces Zizou Bergs, after the Belgian pulled off the biggest win of his career by defeating seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz. Bergs fired nine aces and despite failing to serve out the match at 6-5 up in the second set, he held his nerve in the tiebreak to complete a 7-5 7-6 (4) victory. Bergs had previously beaten Vit Kopriva and Ignacio Buse, and is still yet to drop a set at the event.

Paul leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a dominant win at Indian Wells this year. His movement, consistency and ability to redirect pace should make him a difficult opponent for Bergs, particularly in extended baseline exchanges. However, the Belgian will be full of confidence after such a momentous win over Alcaraz.
