Freiburg preview: Continuing their progress

After the long-term tenure of Christian Streich ended last summer, Freiburg replaced him with Julian Schuster, and they managed to ensure things remained on an upward trajectory last season, missing out on a top four finish on the final day of the campaign.

So far this year, Freiburg have struggled with back-to-back defeats ahead of the September international break. The home team most recently suffered a 4-1 hammering at the hands of newly-promoted Cologne a couple of weeks ago.

Stuttgart preview: A rollercoaster ride

Stuttgart stayed up in the playoffs in 2023, finished as runners’ up in 2024 and then won the DFB-Pokal in 2025, and Sebastian Hoeness has remained a highly sought after coach, but he is still at the helm at the VfB Stadion.

They have started their 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign with a victory and a defeat thus far. On the opening day, they suffered a 2-1 loss to Union Berlin, before edging past Borussia Monchengladbach by a goal to nil a couple of weeks ago.

Freiburg team news: Couple of doubts

Freiburg are dealing with a couple of key injury doubts for this weekend, as midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh are set to be sidelined alongside attacker Igor Matanovic.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Kubler, Ginter, Lienhart, Gunter; Eggestein, Manzambi; Dinkci, Suzuki, Grifo; Holer

Unavailable:

Questionable: Kyereh (Injured), Matanovic (Injured)

Stuttgart team news: Loads of doubts

After their last outing, Stuttgart are now dealing with plenty of doubts for this weekend, as Ameen Al Dakhil, Jeff Chabot and Deniz Undav are among those now potentially unavailable.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Neubel; Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Hendriks, Mittelstadt; Karazor, Stiller; Tomas, Fuhrich, Leweling; Demirovic

Unavailable:

Questionable: Al Dakhil (Injured), Stergiou (Injured), Jaquez (Injured), Silas (Injured), Diehl (Injured), Chabot (Injured), Undav (Injured)

Freiburg vs Stuttgart prediction

Freiburg will head into this one looking to finally get themselves on the board, but they do have the league phase of the UEFA Europa League beginning in a few days’ time. Stuttgart haven’t had to sell on many key players this season, as was the case last year, and they may well head to Baden-Wurttemberg with a lot of confidence as they also play for the UEFA Europa League. They are, on paper, evenly matched sides, and backing a draw would therefore be good value.

Freiburg vs Stuttgart tip: Draw
