Frances Tiafoe suffered a slow start to the season with an early exit at the Australian Open and then only making the third-round of both Indian Wells and Miami. His transition to clay started off promisingly, as he made the final of the Houston Open but lost out to compatriot Jenson Brooksby. The rest of his clay court season has been less sparkling, with his best recent finish being the fourth-round of the Italian Open.
The American could only make the second-round of Hamburg last time out and now takes on Roman Safiullin as he gets his campaign in Paris underway. The Russian has struggled this season and lost in the first-round of both Madrid and Rome most recently.
This will be their first match on clay, but Tiafoe won their only encounter last year in Shanghai. The American is prone to inconsistency and may be frustrated by Safiullin’s patient approach during the longer rallies. Nevertheless, Tiafoe is still a major talent and should be able to find a way to make it through.
