Frances Tiafoe made it through to the second-round for the fourth year in a row at Roland Garros after a professional 6-4 7-5 6-4 win over Roman Safiullin. It was a controlled performance from the American, who has not enjoyed much success on clay since making the final of the Houston Open in late March.
He will face Pablo Carreno Busta in round two. The Spaniard picked up his first win at a Grand Slam since the 2023 Australian Open after an impressive 6-2 7-6 7-5 victory over Francisco Comesana. Carreno Busta was aggressive throughout, dictating a lot of the points in the first two sets and exploiting the Argentine’s weak second serve on more than one occasion.
They have played once before on clay but that was over seven years ago in Estoril with Tiafoe, then just 20-years-old, defeating the Spaniard 6-2 6-3. The American is a far more developed player these days and should be able to win this and reach the third-round for just the second time.
