Frances Tiafoe begins his European clay court season at the Italian Open. He last competed in Houston, but he was unable to reach the final of that event for the fourth straight year as he was defeated by Tommy Paul in the semi-finals. Tiafoe has been more consistent this season in comparison to 2025, but he has not competed on the tour for over a month now.
He received a bye in round one and now takes on Ignacio Buse. The Peruvian comfortably got past Lorenzo Sonego in round one. The 22-year-old broke on four occasions as he completed a 6-3 6-3 victory after one hour and 41 minutes. He also reached the quarter-finals of a Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence last week.
This could be a testing match for Tiafoe after some time away, and Buse should be able to make this a competitive encounter. The American will hope to make a strong start, but Buse is likely to frustrate if he can extend the rallies and force errors from his opponent.
