Frances Tiafoe ended a run of three straight defeats against fellow American Sebastian Korda as he wrapped up a straight sets victory to make the round-of-16 at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. Despite not having much form heading into this slam, Tiafoe hasn’t dropped a set so far and has only been broken once on his serve.

He now takes on Daniel Altmaier for a place in the quarter-finals. Altmaier continued his run at the tournament as he recovered from going a set down to beat Hamad Medjedovic 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-2. The German has not looked back since dumping world number four Taylor Fritz out in the first-round and has reached the round-of-16 for the first time in five years.

Tiafoe leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on clay. They last played against each other in the second-round of the Italian Open two years ago, with Tiafoe coming from a set down to win 3-6 7-5 6-3. Altmaier is capable of causing another shock but Tiafoe has looked rock solid in all of his matches so far and is well placed to make the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the third time.
