THE LOWDOWN
REAL SOCIEDAD
Real Sociedad return to the Champions League for the first time in ten years after they finished fourth in La Liga last season with their highest points tally in the top division since the 2002-03 campaign, when they finished second. The Spanish side reached the round of 16 of the Champions League in the season following that - the only time they have progressed from the group stage in the competition.
It's not been an ideal start to the season for Real Sociedad, who have won just one of their first five La Liga fixtures, their latest outing seeing them fall to a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid.
INTER MILAN
Last year's finalists begin their European campaign hoping for another deep run in the Champions League, and the manner in which they have started in Serie A certainly indicates that they will be a tough team to beat on the continent once more.
Simone Inzaghi's men have won all four of their domestic matches so far by an aggregate score of 13-1, and they look in fine form ahead of the visit of Real Sociedad. Given the manner of their performances so far, there is now a degree of expectation on them to sail through their group, although it may not be so straightforward given the quality of teams they will be competing with.
THE TEAM NEWS
REAL SOCIEDAD
Carlos Fernandez is carrying a suspension over from last season when he was sent off against Roma in the Europa League, while Andre Silva will miss out with a muscular issue.
The Spanish outfit tend to line up in a 4-3-3 formation with with Takefusa Kubo and Barrenetxea flanking Mikel Oyarzabal in attack.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Remiro; Traoré, Zubelida, Le Normand, Aihen Muñoz; Brais Méndez, Zubimendi, Merino, Kubo, Oyarzabal, Barrenetxea
UNAVAILABLE: Carlos Fernández (Suspended), André Silva (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
INTER MILAN
Juan Cuadrado is the only player set to miss the trip to Spain with tendonitis, so Inzaghi is fortunate enough to have a near full strength squad at his disposal.
Davide Frattesi is a more defensive option in midfield compared to Hakan Calhanoglu or Henkrikh Mkhitaryan, while Marko Arnautovic is more likely to be used as an impact sub, if needed, with Marcus Thuram set to partner Lautaro Martinez up front.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Lautaro Martínez, Thuram
UNAVAILABLE: Cuadrado (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
THE PREDICTION
This could be one of the ties of the round as last season's runners-up Inter Milan travel to a Real Sociedad side who can be highly dangerous on their day. The Spanish outfit have struggled with inconsistency in the early part of the campaign though, while Inter have simply been on fire, so the form book very much points towards an away win here.
TIP: INTER MILAN TO WIN
