THE LOWDOWN

REAL BETIS

Former Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini, has a Real Betis side that have had the difficulty of having to play UEFA Europa Conference League football in recent weeks with the Andalusians having a small squad that was only boosted by a late spurt in the January transfer window with the arrivals of Chimy Avila, Pablo Fornals and Cedric Bakambu.

In La Liga, they begin the 26th match day of the 2023/24 campaign sitting just about tucked inside the top seven and the European qualifying spots with nine victories, 12 draws and four defeats thus far. They most recently shared a goalless draw with Deportivo Alaves at the Benito Villamarin last Sunday, meaning they have scored just 28 goals in 25 games.

ATHLETIC BILBAO

If it wasn’t for the story of Girona so far this season then Athletic Club would have been viewed as the story of the season in La Liga as they try and break back into the top four and earn UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in over a decade. The Basque club begin the match day sitting just a couple of points outside of the top four.

Coached by former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, Athletic come into this one on the back of a thrilling 3-2 defeat of the aforementioned title challengers, Girona, at San Mames last weekend. They have suffered just four defeats in 25 matches all season and also have a Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg to look forward to in midweek in a tie they are currently leading by a goal to nil against Atletico Madrid.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides have had fairly hectic fixture lists in the last couple of months and neither of the teams have dealt with them too badly. Betis have been very good at containing most sides at home this season but they did suffer a 4-2 loss at home to Barcelona last month and they now face an Athletic side that have scored 45 goals in their 25 matches with their 25 games consisting 68 goals and a fairly entertaining double chance bet in favour of what could well be a knackered Betis side looks the way to go for this one.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – ATHLETIC TO WIN OR DRAW
