THE LOWDOWN

REAL BETIS

Former Manchester City and Real Madrid boss Manuel Pellegrini is not under pressure in charge of Real Betis but the Andalusians and their supporters will be immensely frustrated by their midweek outing. They suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to a struggling Dinamo Zagreb at the Benito Villamarin in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League knockout playoff round tie.

In the league, though, Betis did manage to move back into the top six ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures. They cruised to a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Cadiz in a regional derby last weekend with goals from Willian Jose and new signing Pablo Fornals, meaning they had suffered just one defeat in their previous five matches.

ALAVES

Just after the turn of the year, there were quite a few reports suggesting that Deportivo Alaves boss Luis Garcia Plata was going to be given his marching orders from Mendizorrotza, with the Basque club performing relatively well following promotion last season but apparent issues between the manager and some players on the training ground.

However, almost immediately following the heightening of those rumours, Alaves have enjoyed a much-improved run of form. They managed three successive La Liga victories against Sevilla, Cadiz and Almeria before recovering from a 3-1 defeat at home to Barcelona by sharing a creditable 1-1 draw with Villarreal last weekend.

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Real Betis had been on an impressive run of form domestically with just one defeat in five matches with that run of form actually beginning after a defeat to Alaves in the Copa del Rey in early January. The visitors, despite their recent improvement, have remained difficult to watch for the neutral, notching just 24 times this season. Given the fact that Betis have only managed 28 goals themselves, this one is not necessarily expected to be a thriller for the neutral.
