THE LOWDOWN
GRANADA
Under the management of former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka, Granada started last season very poorly and was eventually sacked in the early stages of the campaign. He was replaced by former Levante boss Paco Lopez and the 55 year-old’s entertaining and effective football saw the Andalusians leap to the top-of-the-table and, in the end, comfortably gain promotion back to Spain’s top-flight.
They have had a very difficult start back in La Liga, though. As is the style of Paco Lopez, they went away to Atletico Madrid and played on the front foot but were undone by a couple of moments of quality to lose 3-1. After that, they suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to a Rayo Vallecano side that had been widely predicted to struggle this season.
MALLORCA
Since Javier Aguirre’s appointment in the early part of 2022, Real Mallorca have been very difficult to beat and managed to establish themselves firmly in the middle-of-the-table. They have lost Lee Kang-in to Paris Saint-Germain this summer but have remained ambitious with some very interesting additions such as Sergi Darder, Samu Costa, Cyle Larin and Siebe van der Heyden.
The Balearic Islanders will be frustrated with their start to the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, though, after they began the season with a 1-1 draw away to newly-promoted Las Palmas, in which Las Palmas were the better side, and then they were very fortunate to only suffer a 1-0 defeat at home to a Villarreal side that were seemingly in disarray before they turned up in Palma.

THE PREDICTION
Under the management of Paco Lopez, Granada do and are expected to play on the front foot. They were excellent in the second-tier and should be once again. They have started the season poorly and they have been punished by harder nosed sides for their profligacy in front of goal. It could well be argued that Mallorca are the hardest nosed and most effective of all of those mid-table sides. Aguirre’s side should be capable of limiting Granada’s chances and whilst they may nick one on the break, it remains their prerogative to not lose so a low-scoring encounter is likely.
