THE LOWDOWN

GRANADA

With 14 games left of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, Granada, who gained promotion back to the top-flight last season, appear destined for an immediate return to the second-tier as they sit seven points adrift of safety with just two victories in their 24 matches thus far. They have remained entertaining, though, even after Alexander Medina replaced the front foot Paco Lopez earlier this season.

The Andalusians come into this one on the back of a thrilling 3-3 draw with defending champions Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium in Catalonia. The Nazaries did lead in that game before an 80th minute equaliser scored by Lamine Yamal. They have conceded 48 goals in their 24 games so far this season with only Almeria letting in more.

ALMERIA

It has been a bizarre run of form for Almeria. They remain winless and the only team in Europe’s major leagues without a victory this season but they have put in some genuinely impressive performances in the last couple of months and, despite being rock-bottom with just seven points, are not viewed as the worst team in the league.

The Andalusians come into this one on the back of an impressive goalless draw against high-flying, top four chasing Athletic Club last Monday. They also shared a 0-0 draw with title challenging Girona in January and should have won at the Bernabeu, conceding a second-half stoppage-time winner in their game against Real Madrid, which produced some very controversial moments.

THE TEAM NEWS

GRANADA

Defender Ignasi Miquel is missing through suspension for this weekend, whilst the likes of Jesus Vallejo and Lucas Boye are out injured.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Batalla; Sanchez, Mendez, Piatkowski, Neva; Gerard Gumbau, Ruiz, Villar; Uzuni, Arezo, Zaragoza

UNAVAILABLE: Miquel (Suspended), Boye (Injured), Diaz (Injured), Vallejo (Injured), Fernandez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

ALMERIA

Key attacking players Leo Baptistao and Largie Ramazani are out suspended, whilst Ibrahima Kone and Cesar Montes are also doubts.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Maximiano; Pubill, Edgar, Radovanovic, Centelles; Baba, Lopy, Robertone; Arribas, Lozano, Embarba

UNAVAILABLE: Baptistao (Suspended), Ramazani (Suspended), Suarez (Injured), Puigmal (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Montes (Injured), Kone (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Sunday afternoon sees an Andalusian derby take place between the bottom two teams in La Liga. Earlier this season, in the reverse fixture, Almeria led by three goals to nil at half-time before letting that slip to a 3-3 draw and, despite better performances than Granada since then, they somehow remain winless. The two teams have conceded a whopping 99 goals between them so far this season and another high-scoring thriller would appear fairly likely.
