THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

After the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Atletico Madrid seemingly embarked upon the final few months of Diego Simeone’s long and successful reign in charge. However, Atletico began to play some of the best football in Spain and, arguably, were the best side until towards the end of the campaign when they faded a little and finished third.

This time around, they are once again expected to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the Liga title and they have made an excellent start. After dispatching of newly-promoted Granada on the opening day by three goals to one, they then shared a genuinely tedious goalless draw in Seville against Real Betis, albeit that draw was played out in ridiculous temperatures. Last weekend, they hammered a Rayo side who had started with back-to-back 2-0 wins by seven goals to nil.

SEVILLA

During the March international break last season, Sevilla were well involved in the relegation battle down at the bottom end of La Liga. They appointed Jose Luis Mendilibar and the Andalusians not only cruised to safety but they also managed to defeat both Juventus and Manchester United en route to winning another UEFA Europa League title, defeating Roma on penalties in Budapest.

It has been a miserable start to the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, though, and a relegation battle seemingly beckons. Aside from a good performance in Athens against Manchester City in the UEFA Super Cup, which they eventually lost on penalties, Sevilla have started this season with three successive defeats, losing to Valencia on the opening day before being undone by both Alaves and Girona.

THE TEAM NEWS

SEVILLA

Jose Luis Mendilibar is under pressure and searching for answers but he will be without key defensive duo Marcos Acuna and Marcao, as well as defensive midfielder Fernando.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Dmitrovic; Navas, Bade, Gudelj, Pedrosa; Sow, Rakitic; Suso, Oliver, Lamela; En-Nesyri

THE PREDICTION

On paper these are two sides that should be evenly matched and both battling out towards the top end of the table and in recent seasons they very much have been. However, right now, there is a real gulf between the two teams. Atletico Madrid will be aiming to end a very impressive start to the season before the international break, whilst their opposition face the very real prospect of heading into the break with four defeats from four. With home advantage and the current form, Atletico are firm favourites for this one.
