THE LOWDOWN

VIZELA

FC Vizela enjoyed an impressive top-half finish in the 2022/23 Primeira Liga campaign, under the management of Alvaro Pacheco. However, Pacheco departed for Primeira Liga rivals Estoril over the summer and he was replaced by journeyman coach Pablo Villar, who was viewed as a fairly unconvincing appointment.

At the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Vizela have managed just one victory in their opening six matches as they begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three. Their most recent outing was an entertaining 2-2 draw against their former boss, Alvaro Pacheco, as they equalised in the 101st minute away to Estoril.

PORTIMONENSE

In the final 27 games of the 2022/23 Portuguese Primeira Liga season, Portimonense managed to win just five matches and eventually finished just outside of the bottom three places in the table. They have been, for around 12 months or so, one of the worst, if not the worst, teams in the entire division.

Over the summer, they decided to keep former Al Taawon boss Paulo Sergio, who has been in charge of the club since 2020. ‘Alvinegros’ began the season with back-to-back thrashings but have since steadied, albeit they remain among the weakest in the league. They were beaten 3-1 by reigning champions Benfica last weekend.

THE PREDICTION

These are two of the weakest sides in Portugal’s top-flight and both are expected to endured a sustained battle against relegation this season. They had different seasons last year but came into this year with the same goal of avoiding the drop. Portuguese football has often been one of the duller leagues to watch on the continent and, given the quality and meaning that this game will have, a low-scoring encounter is to be expected.
