THE LOWDOWN

FARENSE

Portuguese football and its coaching methods have built up a reputation of being generally defensive and reactive in their approach. Farense went against that style last season to gain promotion back to the top-flight but over the summer have decided to switch to journeyman coach Jose Mota, who was in charge for a part of Pacos de Ferreira’s relegation season last year.

The newly-promoted side have begun the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign by picking up two victories and suffering four defeats in their opening six matches. Their most recent outing was a 1-0 victory over Tondela in the Taca da Liga group stages in midweek, following a loss to Moreirense in the league, who had finished above them in the second-tier last season.

SPORTING LISBON

After winning the Primeira Liga title for the first time in nearly 20 years in 2021, Sporting CP have since missed out to both Porto and then Benfica and last season they didn’t even finish in the top three and the UEFA Champions League qualification spots, really diminishing Ruben Amorim’s burgeoning reputation as one of Europe’s best young coaches.

It has been a very impressive start to the campaign for Amorim’s men, though. A comfortable 2-0 defeat of Rio Ave last weekend made it back-to-back victories as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table with five victories and a draw from their opening six matches so far this season.

THE TEAM NEWS

FARENSE

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Flipe; Delgado, Muscat, Rossi, Alves Pereira Oliveira; Caseres, Goncalves; Matias, Barbosa, Ponde; Ze Luis

SPORTING LISBON

Defender Jeremiah St. Juste remains Sporting CP’s only unavailable player for this weekend as he has been out injured throughout the campaign so far.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Adan; Diomande, Coates, Inacio; Esgaio, Hjulmand, Morita, Santos; Edwards, Paulinho, Goncalves

UNAVAILABLE: St. Juste (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Farense, following promotion, would have potentially preferred to play a more fluent style of football in Portugal’s top-flight. The appointment of Jose Mota has not necessarily been one that can inspire that type of football. They now face a Sporting side that are rebuilding theirs and their coach’s reputation. The fine start to the campaign by the visitors is one that is expected to continue here with a relatively comfortable victory.
