Following promotion last season, Farense will be hoping to emulate the likes of Chaves, Casa Pia and Rio Ave who have come straight up and comfortably survived in the top-flight. They came up but decided to replace their manager, Vasco Faisca, with Jose Mota, who was in charge of Pacos de Ferreira at the start of last season; a season in which Pacos were automatically relegated by the end of the campaign.
They have started life back in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with some underwhelming performances and pressure will grow on Jose Mota almost immediately. They were firstly annihilated by the aforementioned Casa Pia, who are usually low-scoring, by three goals to nil, and then followed that up with a defeat to Porto, less humiliating in terms of performance but still suffering from a gut-wrenching 100th minute winner scored by Ivan Marcano.
CHAVES
Jose Gomes has had no professional career but began as an assistant manager at Pacos de Ferreira in 1995 at the age of just 25 years-old. Since then he has been the assistant at Covilha, Porto, Malaga and Panathinaikos as well as being the manager at Aves, Pacos de Ferreira, Leixoes, Uniao Leiria, Moreirense, Aves again, Videoton, Al Taawon, Al-Ahli, Baniyas, Al Taawon again, Rio Ave, Reading, Maritimo, Almeria, Al Taawon for a third time, Ponferradina and Maritimo – again, overseeing a large part of their relegation last season.
His bizarre career has led to this point where he has replaced the impressive Vitor Campelos in the Chaves dugout and there is cause for concern for Chaves supporters. They have started this season with back-to-back defeats, firstly going down 2-0 at Rio Ave and then being comfortably beaten by four goals to two against Braga. In both matches, they had men sent off which follows the final day of last season in which they were down to eight men on the final day at home to Boavista.

At home, Farense will seek to get on the front foot against a Chaves side that, as mentioned, they will take inspiration from. However, as mentioned, one of the other teams that Farense would have been inspired by, Casa Pia, went away to Farense and dismantled them. Chaves, though, are not quite in as cohesive a position as Casa Pia were and this one could be quite a difficult match to watch for the neutral. It isn’t expected to be a thriller and under 2.5 goals seems very likely as both sides struggle for any sort of rhythm.
