THE LOWDOWN

FAMALICAO

Famalicao, under the management of Daniel Ramos, will fancy their chances of squeezing themselves into the top six and the European spots this season. The home team started the campaign badly last year but still managed to finish ninth and they were pushing towards the top six towards the end of the campaign.

Playing a fluent and easy on the eye style of football, Famalicao lived up to their dark horses tag last weekend by defeating Sporting Braga, who finished third in the Primeira Liga last season, away from home. Ricardo Horta gave Braga an early lead but second-half goals from substitutes Oscar Aranda and Afonso Rodrigues gave Famalicao victory.

MOREIRENSE

The visitors gained promotion to the Primeira Liga last season and will be hoping to emulate several sides in establishing themselves comfortably in the middle-of-the-table. The likes of Casa Pia, Rio Ave and Chaves have all come up to the top-flight and then comfortably remained there the following season, with a variety of styles of football paying dividends.

Moreirense are more on the offensive side of the teams that have gained promotion and they gave their opening match of the season a real go against one of the so-called ‘Big Three’, Porto. Moreirense did take a lead through Godfried Frimpong but Wendell and Toni Martinez both scored to turn the game around for the Portuguese giants.

THE TEAM NEWS

Daniel Ramos plays a fluent and progressive style of football and they are coming into this on the back of a victory at Braga so, without any injuries or suspensions, they are expected to be unchanged for this one.

MOREIRENSE

Under the management of Paulo Alves, Moreirense play some fluent and easy on the eye football for themselves and, despite defeat, put in a good performance last weekend so will also likely be unchanged with no injuries or suspensions.

THE PREDICTION

Portuguese Primeira Liga football has often been very dull to watch in recent seasons with an emphasis on being rugged and defensive and the goals per game average throughout a campaign has often been among the lowest of the bigger leagues in Europe. These two, though, are two sides that prefer to get on the front foot and play a much better style of football that is more enjoyable to watch. Whilst both sides may well go at each other, Famalicao remain the favourites for the match, especially with their home advantage.
