THE LOWDOWN
FAMALICAO
Throughout the vast majority of the second-half of last season, Famalicao were one of the more impressive sides in the Primeira Liga. They eventually finished in the top-half of the table and flirted with the top six and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spots. Under the continued progressive and fun management of Joao Pedro Sousa, Famalicao will be expected to maintain another challenge for the top six this season.
Playing quite a front foot style of football with a very young squad, Famalicao shocked everyone by pulling off a surprise 2-1 away win at Braga on the opening day of the season. That was followed up with a goalless draw at home to newly-promoted Moreirense, albeit they held on to that down to ten men, and then being edged out by a goal to nil away to Sporting CP.
FARENSE
Much like their opposition, Farense to go against the grain of modern day Portuguese football tactics with a more front foot and attacking style of football. The newly-promoted visitors, under the management of journeyman coach Jose Mota, have had to switch back to a more rugged style, though, as they opted to move away from the man who got them promoted, Vasco Faisca, over the summer.
They have started the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign with some bizarre results, though, as they seek to emulate recently promoted sides such as Casa Pia, Chaves and Rio Ave in staying up comfortably following their ascension. They were beaten 3-0 by the aforementioned Casa Pia at home on the opening day before then losing 2-1 late on to Porto. They managed to annihilate Chaves by five goals to nil last weekend, though.

FARENSE
Much like their opponents, Farense are blessed with a fully fit and available squad for this weekend’s encounter and they are unlikely to make many changes this early in the season.

THE PREDICTION
Whilst Famalicao will be fairly frustrated to have picked up just one point from the two matches since they pulled off their surprise opening day win away to Braga, Famalicao remain a fun and attacking team. Joao Pedro Sousa’s hosts take on a Farense side that have collected three points this season and the visitors’ one win came against a Chaves side that could fall into the category of Maritimo / Pacos de Ferreira from last year and collapse throughout the season. Given their home advantage, Famalicao are slight favourites for this one.
