THE LOWDOWN
CHAVES
Chaves returned to the Portuguese top-flight in 2022 and then managed a mid-table finish last season. However, they lost manager Vitor Campelos over the summer to a resurgent Gil Vicente side and had to replace him with journeyman coach Jose Gomes, who had been in charge of eventually relegated Maritimo for much of last season.
Gomes’ spell in charge of Chaves has started, as expected, with some poor performances and results. They were initially comfortably defeated by Rio Ave by two goals to nil on the opening day of the season and have followed that up with a 4-2 loss at home to Braga before then, quite remarkably, being annihilated by five goals to nil against newly-promoted Farense last weekend, leaving Jose Gomes under serious pressure.
MOREIRENSE
The general theme of Portuguese football in recent years, throughout the divisions, has been a reactive and generally defensive style of football with the average goals per game in the Primeira Liga often being among the lowest in Europe’s six biggest leagues. However, Moreirense gained promotion to the top-flight playing a more ambitious and front foot style of football, under the management of Paulo Alves.
Os homens de Moreira de Conegos began the campaign with a 2-1 defeat at home to giants of Portuguese football Porto, albeit they did lead in that match and were encouraged by that. Since then, they have shared a goalless draw with Famalicao before having their game against Braga postponed due to Braga’s involvement in the UEFA Champions League playoffs.
THE TEAM NEWS
CHAVES
Chaves have had a nightmare start to the season but they have a small squad, even though they are blessed with no injuries or suspensions for this weekend’s match at home.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Souza; Correia, Rodrigues, Vitoria, Cruz; Sousa, Guima, Nwakali, Abass; Hector, Paulo Victor

MOREIRENSE
Newly-promoted Moreirense will be tempted to stick with the style and personnel that got them up, especially at least until the first international break of the season.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Oliveira Silva; Pinto, Marcelo, Maracas, Frimpong; Franco, Ofori; Kodisang, Alan, Camacho; Luis

THE PREDICTION
These sides are expected to be down at the bottom end of the table throughout the campaign and their form, at least in terms of results, has showed that so far. Chaves, with their change in manager, will likely struggle and are in danger of falling away at the bottom-of-the-table. Moreirense, on the other hand, have actually performed well by competing with Porto and then taking a good point at Famalicao. Given that, value can be found in a double chance bet in favour of the away side.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – MOREIRENSE TO WIN OR DRAW
