THE LOWDOWN

UDINESE

In what has been a frankly bizarre campaign for Udinese so far this season, the Friulians took it up a notch last weekend as they went to Turin on Monday evening and defeated a Juventus side that had suffered just one defeat before February but Udinese inflicted a successive loss as they themselves try and move away from the bottom three and the relegation places.

Udinese have managed just three victories in 24 Serie A matches so far this season but, quite remarkably, one of those wins has come at San Siro against AC Milan and then the other at the J Stadium last weekend. Managed by former Crawley Town boss Gabriele Cioffi, they have managed 13 draws so keep them afloat thus far.

CAGLIARI

Following their promotion last season after winning the Serie B playoff final against Bari, former Chelsea and Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has led Cagliari to a competitive campaign in Serie A so far as they aim to stave off relegation. The Sardinians begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places.

Since mid-autumn, the islanders have become a lot more proactive as well as difficult to play against but their poor recent form continued last weekend. They were dismantled 3-1 by Lazio last Saturday, which followed a 4-0 thrashing at the Stadio Olimpico against Roma and now means they have endured four successive Serie A losses.

THE TEAM NEWS

UDINESE

Jake Bijol is a doubt for this weekend, whilst the likes of Vivaldo, Enzo Ebosse and Gerard Deulofeu are unavailable as a result of injury issues.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-1-1): Okoye; Perez, Giannetti, Kristensen; Ehizibue, Walace, Samardzic, Zemura; Thauvin; Lucca

UNAVAILABLE: Vivaldo (Injured), Ebosse (Injured), Deulofeu (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Bijol (Injured)

CAGLIARI

Cagliari have several key absentees for this weekend, including Croatian international Marko Rog and Uzbekistan forward Eldor Shomurodov.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Scuffet; Zappa, Mina, Obert; Nandez, Makoumbou, Deiola, Azzi; Nicolas Viola, Gaetano; Lapadula

UNAVAILABLE: Sulemana (Injured), Mancosu (Injured), Shomurodov (Injured), Rog (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Oristanio (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Udinese have been very difficult to defeat this season but their reactive and defensive style of football means they have also managed just three victories with two of them edging past Milan and Juventus with backs to the wall performances. Coming up against a Claudio Ranieri-coached side desperate to end a current losing streak, there is a strong chance this one is actually quite painful to watch for the neutral.
