THE LOWDOWN

TORINO

Former Hellas Verona coach Ivan Juric has been criticised for underperforming with his Torino team. Last season, they finished in mid-table but there were goal scoring woes that kept them in mid-table, failing to ever really kick on and threaten the top seven and the European places - that looks like it could be the case once again this time around.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-0 loss away to a Lazio side that have badly struggled throughout the 2023/24 campaign so far. They have managed two wins this season, coming at home in second-half stoppage-time to newly-promoted Genoa and then with a 3-0 win against a struggling Salernitana side.

HELLAS VERONA

Hellas Verona were the beneficiaries of Serie A re-introducing a ruling whereby teams level on points at the end of the season in a meaningful position would playoff against each other to determine the outcome of their respective seasons. Verona defeated Spezia in June to avoid relegation to Serie B and quickly sought to rebuild with the appointment of Lecce boss Marco Baroni.

Verona began the campaign with back-to-back victories, including a win against Jose Mourinho’s Roma, but they are since winless in the league. They have slipped into the bottom-half of the table and suffered a 1-0 loss at home to an inconsistent Atalanta side during the week, in their most recent outing,

THE PREDICTION

Ivan Juric is coming up against his former side with the two teams firmly ensconced in the middle-of-the-table at this early stage of the campaign. Torino have struggled for goals throughout Juric’s reign and that is once again shown by the fact they have scored just six goals in six games so far this season. Hellas Verona began well but one point collected in their last four matches and four goals scored in six games for themselves also means there is a bit of concern for the visitors. A low-scoring encounter, given those respective records, seems likely.
