THE LOWDOWN

SALERNITANA

Bottom-of-the-table Salernitana have put in some much-improved performances in the last couple of months but they begin the weekend sitting rock-bottom after 20 matches – coming into this one on the back of another defeat, losing from leading at Napoli by two goals to one with a 96th minute winning goal in that game.

Salernitana, coached by former AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi, have managed just two victories in their 20 matches so far this season but, as mentioned, their performances have definitely improved. That loss to Napoli followed another dramatic, late defeat against Juventus – which had come on the back of collecting four points from two games just before the New Year.

GENOA

Following promotion last season, under the management of 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino, Genoa enjoyed an impressive and ambitious summer transfer window that made a mid-table finish appear like the bare minimum in order to look back on the 2023/24 campaign as a success.

After 20 matches of the Serie A season, they sit firmly ensconced in the middle-of-the-table but will want to become a little more proactive and attacking in the final few months with survival seeming all but secure. They come into this on the back of a fairly frustrating goalless draw at home to Torino in their most recent outing, last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

SALERNITANA

Both Lassana Coulibaly and Jovane Cabral are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, whist Grigoris Kastanos, Boulaye Dia and Lorenzo Pirola are out injured.

QUESTIONABLE:

GENOA

Morten Thorsby is a doubt for this weekend’s trip down south to Salernitana, whilst Caleb Ekuban is missing for this one due to injury, too.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Vasquez; Sabelli, Messias, Badelj, Malinovskiy, Caricol; Retegui, Gudmundsson

UNAVAILABLE: Ekuban (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Thorsby (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Saleritana’s performances have improved of late and they are giving pretty much every team a game. Even after being thrashed by Juventus in the cup, they took them deep in Serie A. They now face a Genoa side that have been underwhelming but are steadily moving themselves away from the bottom three. Genoa have underperformed their expected goals so if that does revert to the mean then they could become quite entertaining to watch soon and both teams scoring would appear quite likely for this one.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
