THE LOWDOWN

LAZIO

Under the management of Maurizio Sarri, Lazio performed very well last season and managed an impressive second-place finish, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The capital city club, though, have had a difficult summer transfer window with the loss of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Sarri has expressed his displeasure at the current state of his squad.

They began the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with a 2-1 loss away to Lecce in which they went ahead early on in the first-half through Ciro Immobile but conceded two quick-fire second-half goals from Pontus Almqvist and Federico Di Francesco. They remain a side that should challenge for the top four but they have the capability to have an almighty collapse this season.

GENOA

Genoa were relegated to Serie B for the first time in a long time in 2022 but they gained an automatic promotion to Serie A at the first attempt last season. They lost manager Alexander Blessin to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise mid-way through last season and replaced him with former Italy striker Alberto Gilardino, who eventually guided them to promotion.

They have made some very impressive and interesting additions to their side this summer, most notably Mateo Retegui, but were thrashed on the opening day of the campaign last weekend. They faced a strong Fiorentina side and I Viola dispatched of Genoa by four goals to one. Their high-scoring tendencies were showed by their 4-3 defeat of Modena in the first round of the Coppa Italia the week before.

THE PREDICTION

At Stadio Olimpico this weekend, Lazio have a tough test in making sure their poor start to the campaign does not quickly worsen into something of a crisis. The Rome-based club already have off-field issues and slipping up to newly-promoted opposition will only worsen that. Genoa will be deeply upset with being 4-0 down inside 56 minutes of their return to the top-flight but they still have enough attacking options to pose a threat to their opposition. Whilst Lazio remain favourites, especially with their home advantage, Genoa will be confident of, as mentioned, some joy in this match.
