THE LOWDOWN

GENOA

Following promotion last season, Genoa begin the 14th match day of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign sitting a few points and places out of the bottom three and the relegation places. That is a bit of an underperformance given their promotion and their impressive summer transfer window, under the management of 2006 FIFA World Cup winner, Alberto Gilardino.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Frosinone in their most recent outing, last weekend, following the November international break. Their lack of consistency means that Genoa have managed three victories and three defeats in their last six matches across all competitions.

EMPOLI

Coached by Aurelio Andreazzoli, in his second stint with Empoli, begin the weekend sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places. The Florence-based club have managed just eight goals in their 13 games so far this season and they are the lowest scoring team in Italy’s top-flight with 25 conceded, the joint most.

The visitors’ 4-3 loss at home to Sassuolo was a thrilling but gutting encounter. They had pulled it back with an 86th minute equaliser but eventually lost the game due to a 92nd minute winner by Italian winger, Domenico Berardi. They have now suffered three defeats in their last four Serie A matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

GENOA

Genoa have a few key injury issues for the visit of Empoli with the likes of Albert Gudmundsson, Caleb Ekuban and Kevin Strootman unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Martinez; Vogliacco, De Winter, Dragusin; Sabelli, Thorsby, Badelj, Frendrup, Haps; Malinovskyi, Puscas

UNAVAILABLE: Strootman (Injured), Bani (Injured), Ekuban (Injured), Gudmundsson (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Jagiello (Injured)

EMPOLI

Empoli have a couple of issues but they have no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues so they could name an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Berisha; Bereszynski, Ismajli, Luperto, Cacace; Fazzini, Ranocchia, Maleh; Cambiaghi, Caputo, Cancellieri

UNAVAILABLE: Baldanzi (Injured), Pezzella (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides that are underperforming their general pre-season expectations as they languish down in the bottom-half of the table and would be classed as being in the relegation battle. Genoa have been better than the visitors but, given the money invested especially in attack, the lack of fluency will be a severe frustration and irritation for the hosts. Empoli, as mentioned, are the lowest scoring team in the league so a tense and nervy encounter is bound to ensue with under 2.5 goals appearing likely.

BETTING TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
