THE PREDICTION

World number 21 Frances Tiafoe failed to defend his Houston Open title three weeks ago but he will have been ultimately encouraged by a return to the final, losing out to top seed Ben Shelton in three sets. The 26-year-old has not looked the same player since losing to Shelton in the quarter-finals of the US Open last summer, having come agonisingly close to beating eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semis the year before, but it remains to be seen how he fares after a restorative week in Houston and a split with short-term coach Diego Moyano.

World number 91 Pedro Cachin brought even poorer form into Madrid but the Argentine will be hugely relieved to have snapped his 13-match losing streak with a surprise straight-sets victory over Sebastian Ofner on Thursday. The 29-year-old claimed his maiden ATP title on his favoured clay last summer at the Gstaad Open, with his resultant losing streak perhaps explained as the end of a year full of hard work on and off of the tour, and it will be interesting to see how he reacts now. Cachin beat Tiafoe in straight sets in the third round here last summer but neither player is anywhere near the level they brought to that clash. Given his momentum, take Cachin to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. Keep this tough match far from any promising accumulators.

TIP: PEDRO CACHIN TO WIN A SET
