THE PREDICTION

This could be the match of the day on Saturday as former world number three Sloane Stephens takes on current number six Maria Sakkari for only the second time. 28-year-old Sakkari won their only previous encounter in three sets at the Canada Masters two years ago but clay should level the field a little, particularly as 31-year-old Stephens brings a seven-match winning streak into the equation after an impressive comeback against Elise Mertens on Thursday. The American won her eight WTA title at the Rouen Open last week, beating former top 10s Caroline Garcia and Karolina Pliskova en-route, but in-form Sakkari will be her toughest foe yet in this purple patch. Sakkari beat Donna Vekic handily on Thursday to get her Madrid campaign underway and she has lost to an eventual finalist in each of her last four tournaments, including Iga Swiatek in the Indian Wells final and Danielle Collins in the Charleston semi-finals last time out. Back the resurgent Greek to edge this likely thriller.

TIP: MARIA SAKKARI TO WIN
