World number 72 Pavel Kotov beat ailing clay veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets on Thursday to get a solid foothold in at the Madrid Open and this looks a tough call in a first encounter with in-form Jordan Thompson. 30-year-old Thompson recently won a long overdue maiden ATP title at the Los Cabos Open on hardcourt but he reached the quarter-finals of the clay-court Houston Open earlier this month, losing to defending champion Frances Tiafoe, and went on to claim the Men’s Doubles there alongside Max Purcell to brings some solid clay form into Madrid. A round of 16 loss to Barcelona champion Casper Ruud, whom Thompson beat to lift the Los Cabos trophy, last week followed a three-set win over Jaume Munar that says the Aussie can be competitive here but Kotov is probably the more comfortable in these conditions. Back the Kazakh to earn at least a set on momentum in Madrid to leave the victor up to chance.
