THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Beatriz Haddad-Maia beat Sara Errani in straight sets on Thursday to win her opening match at a fourth-straight tournament but she has failed to claim back-to-back results in any of her last six since making the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open. The 27-year-old capped off a remarkable 2023 by winning the WTA Elite Trophy in November but he has struggled to find her trademark intensity long enough to get back on track so far this year. Haddad-Maia reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, losing out to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, to prove her credentials on clay but this will be a tough clash with rising star Emma Navarro, who shocked the Brazilian on clay at the Charleston Open three years ago.

22-year-old Navarro conceded just three games to Nadia Podoroska on Thursday to build on a reasonable start to her clay swing earlier this month. The American has largely needed top 10 talent to oust her from tournaments this season but Haddad-Maia has that sort of potential in these conditions at her best to make this a very tough call. Three sets seem a reasonable outcome between two scrappers so consider that option as a one off or take Navarro to earn at least a set to leave the result up to chance.

TIP: EMMA NAVARRO TO WIN A SET
