World number one Iga Swiatek is yet to win the Madrid Masters, the last remaining blind spot in her prestigious trophy cabinet on her favoured clay, but she started well by easing past Xiyu Wang on Thursday. The 22-year-old became only the ninth WTA player to reach 100 weeks at world number one on Monday and her place at the top looks secure for now as she enjoys her most dominant part of the season in the run-up to Roland-Garros, where she has claimed three of her four Grand Slam titles since 2020. World number 30 Sorana Cirstea overcame impressive wildcard Alex Eala in three tight sets on Thursday to get a foothold in at Madrid but the Romanian has drawn the shortest straw possible here. Swiatek leads their head-to-head 3-0 after recently beating Cirstea in straight sets en-route to the Qatar Masters title in February and she can be backed to emulate that result here.
