THE PREDICTION

World number four Daniil Medvedev is far from is best on clay, often making his dislike for the surface wholly known, but he dug deep to fabulously win the Italian Open almost a year ago – finally completing his career set of surfaces. The 28-year-old spent an inordinate amount of time on court at the Australian Open in January, edging through three three-set marathon matches before running out of steam from two sets up to Jannik Sinner in the final, and he has not looked the same since on tour despite finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells.

World number 36 Matteo Arnaldi stands a fair chance at an upset against the Russian after an impressive opener over Christopher O’Connell on Thursday but he was well beaten in their two meetings last season. The 23-year0old reached the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open in impressive circumstances last week but a straight-sets defeat to third seed Casper Ruud suggests there is still a gulf between his level and the very top players on tour. Back Medvedev to win outright with three sets about as likely as two.

TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN
