THE PREDICTION

World number 68 Roberto Carballes Baena overcame fellow clay enthusiast Dominik Koepfer in three sets on Thursday to build on his strong run to the last 16 in Barcelona last week, where he stunned Lorenzo Musetti before defeat to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 31-year-old failed to defend his Marrakech Open title earlier this month but he did finish runner-up to Matteo Berrettini to further suggest he has a big shot an upset here but Alexander Bublik’s hammer serve could be the defining factor in Madrid’s high altitude.

The 26-year-old brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 18th into the draw despite riding a three-match losing streak, losing three of his last four since finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Bublik is far from his best on clay but unique conditions here in Madrid punish the less enthusiastic players less, with a three-set exit to Holger Rune at this stage last season proving what it could take for RCB. Back the in-form Spaniard to earn at least a set given their respective form but this is a tough call that should be kept from accumulators.
