THE PREDICTION

World number 26 Victoria Azarenka can count just one clay-court trophy amidst her illustrious career total of 21 WTA titles but she remains a constant threat at this level with a remarkable eight Masters crowns. The 34-year-old conceded just four games to fellow veteran Tatjana Maria on Thursday but she will face a tougher test against Spanish number one Sara Sorribes Tormo, who stunned Elina Svitolina in the second round to garner some attention from home crowds in Madrid.

World number 55 Sorribes Tormo came within a hair’s breadth of reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, losing a marathon three-setter to Beatriz Haddad-Maia, but a lack of consistency since makes this so far spotless run in Madrid something of a surprise. It is also surprising to find that these two tour stalwarts have yet to meet on tour but it promises to be an entertaining clash between two players who are more than happy to dig in a trade baseline shots. Azarenka’s recent form suggests she has enough to edge through but home advantage, and more affinity with clay, favours Sorribes Tormo. Take Azarenka to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: VICTORIA AZARENKA TO WIN A SET
