Hanyu Guo enters the Wuhan Open as a wildcard, with the Chinese player ranked 240 in the world. The 28-year-old’s most significant singles achievement this season was qualifying for her first Roland Garros main draw, where she pushed McCartney Kessler to three sets before losing 4-6 7-6 (1) 7-5. However, Guo has struggled for results since June, losing five consecutive singles matches. Her latest defeat came against Aliona Falei at the Suzhou ITF event. 

She will play Sorana Cirstea in the first-round. The Romanian has enjoyed an impressive final season on tour, climbing to a career high of number 16 in the world. Her standout achievement came at the Italian Open, as she beat Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the semi-finals. She withdrew from the China Open due to injury, but she has declared herself fit for this event in Wuhan.

Cirstea will be seen as the clear favourite to come through this one.
