THE LOWDOWN
EMPOLI
After back-to-back 14th placed finishes since gaining promotion back to Italy’s top-flight in 2021, Empoli will be expected to struggle down at the bottom end of the table with the expectation and general feeling that they have begun to stagnate under Paolo Zanetti since Alessio Dionisi got them up and then Aurelio Andreazzoli initially kept them up.
The Florence-based club began the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with a very disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to a Hellas Verona side that are also expected to struggle this season. They followed that up with a 2-0 defeat away to a Monza side who do have the financial capability to simply out-muscle Empoli but a brace either side of the break from Andrea Colpani will remain a genuine concern for Zanetti and Empoli.
JUVENTUS
Juventus finished seventh in Serie A last season after a ten-point deduction was enforced, which had followed a 15-point deduction that got overturned a few months earlier. The Old Lady, due to the financial irregularities that went on for these punishments, have been kicked out of European football this season so can focus on rebuilding towards a genuine title race.
They began in extremely impressive fashion as they hammered Udinese by three goals to nil. The defensive and pragmatic management of Massimiliano Allegri meant that at half-time, at 3-0, they sat back and defended the lead and were the worse team. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw at home to Bologna in which they were fortunate to steal a point.

THE PREDICTION
Empoli are a poor side and have been on the verge of falling off their tightrope for some time and the Florence club could well be victims of that this season. They are one of the favourites for relegation and have started badly. Juventus have played three bad halves of football in their opening two matches but they will be extremely confident they can dispatch of poor opposition this weekend, as they got back into the habit of doing for the majority of last season.
TIP: JUVENTUS TO WIN
